Insurgents

Mysterious freebies!
Insurgents
Welcome back! I recently ordered Osprey's Black Ops rules from Amazon and ordered some insurgent forces from Armies Army miniatures to use with them (1 squad and a command pack). Black Ops didn't grab me once the book arrived (though they seem a fine set of rules) But the minis are lovely. The ever-generous Keith also threw in some loose freebies. This moved me to actually do some painting, my first for 2016!

I'm thinking these will sit nicely with my older AA minis (now available from Brigade in the UK) and form a decent near-future looking force. The mysterious red-armoured chaps will make good elites and the Rusk minis will work fine as special forces.

You may have noticed that15mm Frostgrave didn't happen... I wound up deciding it wasn't very solo friendly and quickly lost interest. No regrets though, as I grabbed a copy of Dragon Rampant fantasy rules with some Christmas gift voucher action and am quite excited to try them out.

Here's to a great 2016, with more painting than last year :)

  1. Have you tried the 'Brink Of Battle' skirmish rules? They would suit lots of your superbly painted minis!

    1. Yes, a very cool system although not quite right for me. I'm always looking for ways to play solo, and BoB isn't ideal in this regard.

  2. Those men in red look very nice - not a colour I would've been game to use, but the different areas of red work really well.

    1. Cheers! areas of high contrast work really well in 15mm, almost regardless of colour. I think orange would work well here too, but I use that a lot for a different faction.

  3. Good to have you back. Better to bail on Frostgrave early than wind up with a bunch of stuff that doesn't quite fit with the rest of the collection.

    1. Even though I love the sculpts (best in the business I think) fantasy just doesn't feel right in 15mm for me... Maybe its because the original Traveller minis were 15mm, but I love it for sci-fi. Frostgrave is a great game, but it's more about spell interaction than anything else, so better for 2p action than solo.

    2. Hey at least the ones you did looked great. Some of that terrain might work for sci-fi in certain circumstances too, I suppose.

  4. Good to see you back! I've been looking through both Lion and Dragon Rampant and they intrigue me as well.

    1. Cheers Chris! Dragon rampant is about the most forgiving game Ive ever read when it comes to what scale and basing style of miniatures you use with it. I'd like to try a test game this weekend if life doesn't get in the way.

  5. Best of the new year to you, Jacker. Very nice looking troops. The non-helmeted trooper is really cool.

    1. Amazing what a difference a good face on a mini makes, isn't it? Cheers Jay!

    2. He's pretty ugly looking... as they say "this is why you don't make CHA your dump stat" ;)

Anyway these are fantastic work as always, and the mysterious freebies are a pleasant surprise (for us as well!). I love their slit visors and the armour/fabric mix in their outfits.

  6. If you're not a fan of Black Ops, I highly recommend the 5 Core series by Nordic Weasel games. Great for near future and solo play.

    1. I'm quite the fan of 5core! The second edition is really brilliant as a general skirmish wargame/toolkit. My main issue with it is the number of different conditions a figure can be in for working out guard fire. Not a dealbreaker, but makes it a bit fiddly solo. I wound up having to use 6 or so types of tokens to play. I'm partway through writing yet another rules set myself, but frequently wonder if it would be easier to just hack 5core a bit.

    1. Cheers Francis! They paint up really fast, balaclavas and nothing too fiddly. Very nice sculpts.

  8. Glad to see you around again. Very nice painted models as usual. I'm also starting with Dragon Rampant, but I have just received Black Plague so guess what? I'm painting the zombie horde for both systems.

    1. Good thinking! I'm probably going to start painting up some Myth minis for DR. The figures are quite fun, but the game is far from it :)

  10. Nice to see a post. We jumped in full force at 28mm for Frostgrave. It just seemed the best choice.

And I spent the break getting my Dragon Rampant forces ready. Good luck.

    1. I miiiight use my unused Myth plastics for DR. The game sucks but the figures are not bad...

  11. Very nice minis and painting (as you'd expect from your good self).

Not sure about the 15mm comments 'not for Fantasy skirmishing' but all to their own. I'd agree about Frostgrave though - from my understanding and reading (but not playing, yet) the strength comes from the campaign aspect which wouldn't be as key for solo games.

Also should mention that I've duly given you mention on a recent post about some modular sci fi terrain I was working on and blatantly ripped off your idea.

    1. Very cool! That is exactly where I would be headed for a cyberpunk board, I have spent a lot of time figuring out LED systems. The funny thing is, I built those tiles AFTER building (and subsequently giving away) a modular city layout using MDF buildings. My conclusion was that city layouts are not ideal for small cyberpunk-ey skirmishes, rather "zoomed in" building interiors are.

  12. Great stuff! I rarely have time to paint (let alone play) any minis lately, but every time I see one of your posts it sends me searching for 15mm to see new miniatures.
Excellent paint job and photos to match!

    1. Cheers! I haven't done much in the last 3 months myself, but it's been very rewarding getting back into it. I have a big box of unpainted minis too, so quite economical!

  13. I hope you will get to try Black Ops sooner or later. I just gave a first read to the rules and have to try them solo. Your point of view would certainly be helpful!
